Blazon
Per pale: dexter, Or a demi-eagle displayed sable; sinister, gules a key palewise Or.
Origin & meaning
The half imperial eagle recalls Geneva's place in the Holy Roman Empire; the key stands for Saint Peter and the prince-bishopric. The two halves were joined in the 15th century.
Above the shield runs the motto “Post Tenebras Lux” — “After darkness, light”.
The flag
The square cantonal flag carries the eagle and the key, split gold and red.
