Gem. und Pfarrdorf. H. gehörte zur alten Herrschaft Pfeffingen im Besitz der gräflichen Linie Pfeffingen-Thierstein. 1517 wurde es von Graf Heinrich von Thierstein an den Bischof von Basel verkauft, und dieser trat es 1527 an Solothurn ab. 1795 wurde in H. ein mit Oberkirch verbundenes Vikariat errichtet; 1804 erfolgte die Erhebung der Ortschaft zur eigenen Pfarrei.
