Politische und Kirchgem. Frühere Formen: Brione de Menuxio 1400; Briono 1591. Im Mittelalter bildete es mit Minusio eine einzige Gem. Heute besitzt es noch einige Grundstücke gemeinsam mit Minusio und Mergoscia. 1479 wurde es eine selbständige Gem., bildete jedoch schon 1397 einen Zehntenkreismit den zwei vorgenannten Gem. und Contra. 1313 besass es schon seine Statuten. Kirchlich gehörte es zur Pfarrei Locarno, von der es 1777 als selbständige Unterpfarrei losgelöst wurde. Die Pfarrkirche wurde 1559 eingeweiht und 1868 restauriert. Nach Simona stand die frühere Kirche von B. im Weiler Viona. Bevölkerung: 1845: 696 Einw.; 1920: 405. Geburtsregister seit 1678, Eheregister seit 1777, Sterberegister seit 1733. —■Vergl.
