Das Dorf verdankt seinen Ursprung und seinen Namen der zwischen 1126 und 1134 gegründeten Prämonstratenser-Abtei. Das Wappen erscheint erstmals 1731 auf den Kommunions-Kannen der Pfarrkirche. Das Band mit den drei Muscheln stammt aus dem Wappen der Gründer der Abtei Lac de Joux, den Herren von Grandson.
