Gem. und Dorf in der Kirchgem. Steffisburg. Der Name bezeichnet einen mit Fa rnk raut bewachsenen Ort. 1299 empfängt das Kloster Fraubrunnen Einkünfte zu Varne. Nach diesem Ort nennt sich ein altes Geschlecht, das im 15. und 16. Jahrh. in Thun und Bern auftritt und heute in der Gegend von Stefflsburg im Bauernstände noch vertreten ist. — Otto, von Eriz, Kunstmaler, 1856-1887, ist erwähnt im SKL.
